Imagine you’ve got a record coming out (those things in Sainsbury’s next to the Blu Rays).

What will its title be? Can you come up with a track list? What is your artist name? What will your logo look like?

TASKS

  • Design a logo for your artist name. What will it be?
  • Think of a name for your album – draw a font for it. See below for inspiration.
  • You need a track list. Think of, say, ten song names.
  • Finally, design your album cover. It needs to catch eyes in the record store (or supermarkets) – how will you use colour? Space?

INSPIRATION:

Soull II Soul: Club Classics Vol One (1989) – Solid gold colour, instantly jumps off the shelf.
Prominent figure – this music will make you dance!
With shades on!

Use of black and white contrasts nicely with gold.
Newcleus: Jam On Revenge (1984)
You could go the sci-fi/superhero route.
Here, Marvel artist Bob Camp lets you know how out-of-this world Newcleus are, their lyrical and musical abilities mirrored by superhuman surroundings.
And a dinosaur, because why not?

1970’s Tea For The Tillerman by Cat Stevens – a cover letting you know there’s a story ahead of you.
A tillerman was in charge of steering the back wheels of a fire engine and deploying the ladder!
This guy in the picture is enjoying his tea, and I wonder if his tabel is on wheels.
Rapper Nas released Illmatic in 1994, and it was all about his home of New York and his life – hence the baby picture.
He wasn’t the only rapper to do this.
Maybe you could draw yourself as a baby, or even create a cover digitally like this!
I love this Lupe Fiasco cover from 2006 – it reminds me of Tudor paintings where they were surrounded by their belongings.
You could draw yourself flying surrounded by important or fun things!
Lupe here has a Qu’ran his dad gave him, designer glasses to show he’s made it and can afford expensive eyewear, a Nintendo cartridge (I would have Zelda!), and a friend’s boom box (see elsewhere on Homeschool Mixtape!).
