Back when I was little, you didn’t play music from your phone. People played cassettes, and boom boxes played them loud.

TASK: JUNK MODELLING

People are fed up with small phones with rubbish sound. You’ve been asked to bring the boombox back into fashion. You need to submit a design sheet, with modern tweaks and your best sketching and labelling. Then, make a prototype.

Your recycling may or may not be cancelled for a little while – let’s make some use of the cardboard and yoghurt pots your family are squirrelling away. Find or make a cuboid and try and make one of these boom boxes, or a colour combination of your own!

You could even stick your phone or tablet inside it and get the house party rockin’…

  1. Find some junk to make your boombox out of.
  2. Come up with a rough design based on what you’ve collected. What do the buttons do?
  3. Make it!
  4. Maybe hide your phone in it securely (with an adult’s permission), hoist it on your shoulder and rock the house.
  5. Post pictures of your boomboxes on twitter #homeschoolmixtape or email to [email protected]

Maybe use smaller tissue boxes (or similar) to make mini boomboxes!
